Laing determined to get back on top

They say getting knocked down in life is a given, it’s getting back up that is a choice.

Group 1-winning trainer Robbie Laing has dusted himself off once or twice before throughout his turbulent career, but he was dealt another cruel blow last week when his stable stalwart Stars of Carrum died in a routine trackwork session.

Laing to keep good times rolling

Hey Fat Cat

If anyone is familiar with riding the racing rollercoaster, it’s Robbie Laing.

Laing has long proven himself as a versatile trainer, winning feature juvenile races like the Maribyrnong Plate to major staying contests like the Victoria Derby, as well as marathon jumps events, most notably, the Grand Annual Steeplechase.

Laing tests Fat Cat in Group 1

Robbie Laing will test the credentials of Hey Fat Cat for the third week in a row by tackling Saturday’s $750,000 Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m), with the potential to run again next weekend in the Australian Guineas.

Laing pair set for Flemington

In-form trainer Robbie Laing will on Saturday head to Flemington with a pair of horses who confused him with the way they started and therefore finished off their most recent races.

Firstly, El Soleado jumped when Laing wasn’t expecting it at Caulfield on February 3 and managed to win, before a week later at the same track, when Laing anticipated that Hey Fat Cat would jump and lead, instead he settled a clear last and finished fourth in the Autumn Stakes.

Fat Cat to run fourth-straight week

Hey Fat Cat is set to run for the fourth Saturday in a row, with Robbie Laing’s galloper aiming to tackle Saturday’s $1 million Group 1 Australian Guineas.

The three-year-old finished fifth, 3.65 lengths behind Mr Brightside in last Saturday’s G1 Futurity Stakes, following runs in the Autumn Stakes and CS Hayes, but Laing said early signs are positive the horse is ready to back-up again.

Hey Fat Cat delivers on talent

Robbie Laing knew a year ago of the inherent ability Hey Fat Cat possessed, but also that getting him to harness it was going to be a challenge.

At his most recent start, Hey Fat Cat gave an indication of how talented he is with a 7.5-length maiden win over 1200 metres at Sale on January 14, with his fast time of 1:08.77 only .32 seconds off Emjay Hussey’s record of 1:08.46 set in October 2009.
